You think I'm joking? Various vitamins (especially B12) come from bacteria & animals (generally grass eating ruminants), and eating fecal matter is one potential source, same with various digestive enzymes (gut flora).

It's a pretty common cause of coprophagia in various animals, especially "bitches"... just ask any veterinarian. To wit (from link):

VITAMIN DEFICIENCY – Vitamin B1 deficiency has been shown in the laboratory to cause coprophagia, but a number of vitamins (including Vit B complex and Vit K) are made by bacteria in the large bowel.
