So I've been at my current job for about 6 years, and my co-worker "Todd" in the office next to me has been here about 8. He's an ok guy, but a simp through and through. He's married to his second wife, has a kid by both his ex wife, AND his current wife, and both his ex wife and current blow his phone up constantly pestering him while he's at work. He's high strung, always looks miserable, and is always talking about everything he has to do at home on the weekends and so on.
We work in the IT field, and let me tell you compared to a lot of people in the field, we have it made. Our company is a small company of about 60 employees. ONE office, NO on call, NO after hours, NO weekends, NO 24/7 bullshit, we get all the holidays, NO travel, we only have to support our employees and not the general public, you name it. Anyone who works in the IT field knows how rare that is today. Are there better paying jobs out there? Sure, but this one provides so much peace of mind and the pay is reasonable. Keep this in mind as it will be important later.
Since I've been working here, he's lived in THREE houses in 6 years. When I first started, Todd lived maybe 5 miles away from the office. It allowed him to go home on lunch, spend time with the family on his break, eat meals there and so on. I went over there once and it was a really great place, a nice two story house in a well to do neighborhood. But of course that wasn't good enough for his stay at home wife (who conveniently quit work after they got married from what I understand). He tells me he's moving. When I ask why, he says "She wants something nicer". So he ended up spending money a BIGGER house, and was stressed for months going through inspections, trying to sell the home, pack, all the usual crap that comes with moving, all the while trying to work full time while his wife calls him constantly.
Their new home puts him at about a 35 minute drive from the office now. Todd is now constantly talking about the work that needs to be done on the house, and how he fixed this and painted that, blah blah blah. All the while he appears to be "beaming with pride" about his new home, but you can see how worn and defeated he is. Cut to a couple of years later, he tells me he's moving AGAIN. He claims "they want to live on a bigger plot of land", but honestly I bet his wife doesn't like THAT house either. So repeat everything. Months of stress, the whole 9 yards.
Their second new home puts him now an hour's drive from the office, living in the middle of nowhere. He's been there about 8 months now. His cell phone continues to blow up with either texts or calls. Nearly every 25-30 minutes and it's always the same "yeah" "yeah" "I don't know" "OK" "Alright I'll check when I get off work" "I don't know where it is" "I'll be home at around 6" "I love you too bye" bullshit. Now Todd really looks tired, and spends most of his time at the computer barely talking to anyone.
So the final chapter JUST came yesterday. Todd comes to my office right before I'm going home and tells me he just put his two week notice in. I don't really care but to be polite I say "Ohh cool a better job came up for you??" "Well, yeah the pay is a little better, but I'm going to be working a lot more hours and it's further away. I figure I'll take the train up to (where ever) and then I can catch the the bus" and so on and so on. Most people would be excited to get a new job, but he doesn't appear to be. The whole time he looks like a man who's been given the death sentence. I figure he took the position because of the new house and the associated expenses with it because of his nagging, stay at home wife.
All I could do was wish him well, and just smile and laugh after he walked away like he was going down death row. In two weeks, no telling what will happen!
