Having visited there the poverty is the worst on the island, I know at one point many years back it had Europe's highest heart attack rates and the lowest life expectancy for men under 65. The poverty is real and to make it a gendered issue muddies the larger societal problems that should be addressed.

But to clarify it for everyone: My mother stole the money that I earned during summer break in my teens to give it to my sister for her makeup/shopping/club trips. I must have been 15 at the time while she was 19

Her reasoning for taking my money was that I didn't need it anyway as I never left the home (which obviously was a lie seeing as I had a job) and that I had to pay rent anyway (She was older than me, had a "real" job and she didn't pay anything)
