It's due to Triver's of parental investment. The sex that has the highest obligatory investment to the offspring of a species (most often the female) will more stringently select mates relative to the length of the gestational period and the required time/ resources needed to nurse and raise the children. In this process the opposite sex will decrease their standards relative to a higher obligatory input of the aforementioned sex
