That's heartbreaking. Is he okay?

Apparently he was basically borderline-suicidal for about a year or three (I learned of all of this AFTER the fact, while I've known the guy my entire life -- i.e. "old childhood friend" -- due to various things {mostly on his end} I was almost entirely "out of touch" with the guy for nearly a decade both before, during and for several years after this "revelation" happened)...

But then (and mind you this was while I was still largely "unaware" of anything but the bare fact that the dirvorce had happened) he met another woman (ayah), and has subsequently married her, and via that has found "meaning & purpose in life" again. (Scary I know, but*....)

So at present he's back on (presumably) a fairly-even keel... but of course how long THAT will last -- especially as the "new" wifeling is a blatant gold-digger (complete with teenage crotch-spawn, and parasitic ex-hubby hovering nearby) -- and how he will react if/when he finds out (as, alas, more's the pity, I strongly suspect he eventually/ultimately will) that the new wifeling is (probably) even worse than the old one... well who knows.

I fear the worst, but ain't shit I can do about it until it happens.

* At THIS stage... well, there's nothing that anyone can do about it anymore... as the saying goes "You can save a drowning man, but you CANNOT save a man who thinks he is 'in love'!"

Fucking horrible life.

Well, on the one hand, from one point of view, YES... and yet on the other hand, and a different point of view... NO.

He's wealthy & "successful" enough* that an "amicable" divorce settlement (no kids, no alimony, just division of property) which left her with assets worth probably north of $5 million (and in fact likely closer to $10m+) ... and him with substantially MORE than that (various "trust" & other structured familial business asset things).

Without going into too much detail, he met his "new" wifeling via various -- let's just call them "entertainment industry" related venues -- and so she's given him "access" (in no small part due to his having plenty of excess money) to various social-circles and *ahem* "status" events that he apparently "values"** (de gustibus non est disputandum) ... even though they (he AND she) are at best just "marginal/orbiter" attendees (aka occupants of what are essentially the "cheap seats" {albeit usually expen$ive to occupy} at so called "exclusive" events... the mix of political-entertainment & pseudo-intellectual stuff).

WHY he considers such things to be of "high value"...

Well I'm not certain I fully understand, nor that I ever will... (** & *** below) I just know that he DOES consider them important (ergo obtaining them seems to make him "happy"; at least temporarily).

Hope him the best.

Indeed... just not sure how long it will last; and what depths he will sink to if/when it doesn't.

* You could argue nearly all of it is via inheritance (second generation of an SME business); but that wouldn't be entirely fair, as he was a very active part of growing the business. To be sure his entry into it was entirely due to "nepotism" (founder's son), but he wasn't just some incompetent trust-fund kid... which in fact was probably a MAJOR part of the inherent problem of his marriage (or at least his ignorance of & obliviousness to his wife's infidelity), because he was often out of town (including overseas), for many days even multiple weeks on end, on various business trips (both technical related, and then sales, and later "M&A" stuff)... ergo the "cat's away" the "mice will play."

This was in fact something I had "generically" warned him about many years prior (IIRC while they were still only "engaged") -- and THAT (the warning) was later probably rather ironically THE primary cause of the ~decade-long loss of/minimal contact between us (him both not wanting to admit my warning had been apt; and also because -- as he later stated -- he suspected I had "known" more than I did {i.e. that the warning was based on specific knowledge, rather than general predictive, what we would call AWALT and "red pill" or "red flag" stuff})... as well as one of the reasons I eventually found out the full story (or at least as much of it as he chose to tell me that is), because afterwards, he wanted/demanded to know what I had really "known" about all those years prior & during).

** What I think of and call "Orbiter/Fanboi" type things. It's a common enough trait -- at least it seems the majority of people engage in it/suffer from it -- that they LONG to "hob nob" with various "celebrities" and/or "VIP's".. and will go to great lengths/expense to do so, even if there is little or no actual "contact" or interaction. (Though of course they ideally seek more than merely being near/in the same room, yet they get "weak kneed" and/or later "gush" about {and often exaggerate} even some trivial proximity.)

It's a phenom that apparently gives him (as it does many other people) some feeling of "fulfillment" and/or "pleasure"; even a sense of "accomplishment" (i.e. Can you believe it? He actually met/shook hands with person XYZ! etc).

Can't say I've ever really understood that -- not on a personal level anyway, as I don't suffer from anything of the sort*** -- Over the several decades of my life I've met (and even "known") many many people who are (or later on became) relatively "notable"... including certain "celebrity" and "VIP" types (i.e. massive business successes, people in high political positions, etc)... and frankly, none of them ever really "impressed" me (again at least not in the manner that they apparently DO"impress" other people).

*** Exactly WHY the phenom doesn't affect me in the way that it apparently does so many others... is a good question. Some people have told me that it's just a sign of my own personal "arrogance" etc ... but in fact I think it's rather the opposite: it's more of an "Ecclesiastes" worldview (weltanschauung) philosophy or outlook on life (i.e. "Vanity of Vanities").

Possibly it's also that I had 'early/young' "successes" -- and so had a taste of applause, minor notoriety, even semi-sort of fans/followers (people of various ages "gushing" over several/various things I'd done, things I myself didn't {and still don't} think were really that noteworthy, much less "impressive") and of course the corollary jealous/envious detractor/haters (meh?)... I never really cared for (or about) EITHER group (both of which seem to be equally ignorant/baseless to me); and it's not so much that I developed a "DGAF" attitude, as it was that -- since I had NOT DONE any of those things in order to SEEK any such result (applause, accolades or notoriety, much less "fans") -- but that instead I had been focused on the thing itself (accomplishing the task at hand), well the whole experience left me rather... nonplussed.
