tl;dr

Being masculine doesn't mean being an asshole.
Neither does being competitive, being aggressive, being assertive or being focused on your own interests. People who call those "asshole" is what the weak tits do.
Calling lying, cheating, stealing and other dishonest or underhanded actions "asshole" is valid.
Chicks dig men who compete, and many dig ones who do it in the slimy ways.

How was the guy in the OP "an asshole"?

This is category error typical of soy-boys and gamma males, but also commonly main by blue-pilled men who do not know better. Those who shrink from competition are quick to condemn it.

One level of masculine is to:

Take your self and your view as a point of reference, rather than adopting her frame
Focus on your wants and needs, rather than catering to hers
Be assertive
Not shrink from competition - in sports, at work, in politics, etc.
In general, not be a pussy.

The asshole thing, imho only comes in when you do the above things in an overly unfair or unjust manner.

Competing at work is fine; serving up a co-worker is a dick move
Intense physical competition in sports is fine; low blows and crack backs, blind side checks, taking dives to draw penalties, head hunting, etc. are poor sportsmanship
Trying to do well financially is fine. Resorting to crime to get there (white- or blue- collar) is not so cool.
