I came home from work today and noticed that my spider's enclosure had been slightly moved. I thought that perhaps somebody had moved the enclosure to get a better view of my tarantula, because it wasn't uncommon for guests to do so. However, upon closer inspection of it, I found out that the lid wasn't properly sealed on. I knew immediately that something was off about this situation, because in the history of owning my tarantula, nobody had ever opened the lid of the enclosure to look at her.

When I noticed the lid was unsealed, I took it off and searched all around the enclosure for my spider, but she was nowhere to be found. My heart sank to my stomach when I realized that she was no longer in her enclosure. I immediately ran to my girlfriend, who had been inside the apartment all day, and asked her if she had any guests over. She said no. I told her my spider was missing, and then her face went blank and she looked away from me. My heart sank, because I knew something happened.

I asked her repeatedly where my spider went, and she kept saying she didn't know, but eventually she told me the truth, she told me she killed my spider. I started crying, because I loved that spider. I know spiders are unconventional pets, but I had her for 10 years and went through a lot of tough times with her. I asked her why she did it, why she hurt me and my spider which I was so fond of, and she told me "I couldn't stand having it inside because it creeped me out so much." I asked her what she did to her, and she told me she scooped her out of her enclosure with a cup, put her on the ground, and then stepped on her and put her body in the trash. I told her not to talk to me and left to go to my parents house, where I'm currently staying for an unknown amount of time.

I knew that my tarantula creeped her out, but she's known about her since before we started dating. I told her if it was a problem, then let me know, but she didn't say much after I assured her that I'm extremely cautious and protective of the spider. She knew that in all of the time I owned the spider, it had never gotten out on accident. She's lived with the spider for roughly a year now, and despite the occasional "eww it's so creepy" comment, she never seemed bothered by it.

What should I do? Would this be a dealbreaker for you? I love this girl, but I think she went way too far, and I'm struggling at the thought of talking to her right now.

TL;DR: girlfriend intentionally took my spider out of the cage and proceeded to step on her while I was at work. I'm not talking to her right now and I'm staying at my parents house.
