Pretty much.

He definitely went insane. And the most likely cause (pre-antibiotic era) was syphillis.*

Doubt it was contracted just from some single hookup with just one prostitute (though of course that WOULD technically be possible)... chances are far more likely that he was a regular "john."

* EDIT: though of course use of opiates (some of which were probably of dubious quality to boot) etc... also not exactly conducive to "sanity"; and exactly when he became (or began becoming) "insane" is also debatable; but there is to my mind no question that he was already rather "unhinged" well before he was committed (not that THAT helped matters of course: it rarely does).
