Bit of a back story. I’m currently 24. Always bullied growing up (not the best looking guy), never had a girlfriend (had opportunities but I never really felt that connection with the people who wanted one). Applied to join the Royal Navy as a Diver when I was 16, passed the interviews, exams, fitness tests by 17. Was put on a 4 year waiting list because I was so young and because it takes ages to train divers etc. During this time my sinuses got bad which meant I couldn’t really dive anymore.
Pretty much spiralled downhill from there with awful depression and anxiety (mainly caused from loneliness (which I still very much am) and just a shitty childhood etc). I barely worked between the navy application and now because of my mental health.
Last week I thought, fuck it. I need to get out of this shit. I started my application to the Royal Army (REME - Hope to be some sort of mechanic/engineer). So far so good with the application. Got to go in next week for my first briefing to talk about the next steps etc. Yesterday was also the first time I’ve done any sort of exercise since my depression got bad.
I went for a run to start getting fit, ready for my fitness tests and for the army life. It was kind of disheartening at how unfit I am these days compared to when I was a teenager but I’m going to stick with it. Find some purpose and get my life on track.
If any of you guys are suffering with mental health like I am and are putting things on hold. Now is the time to change that. Enough is enough.
