I asked, “Can I say goodbye to my daughter.” They said, “It’s not a goodbye situation.”
I asked, “Why didn’t she want to call me for father’s day or my birthday?” (These dates are on the same day usually). They said, “Because she didn’t ask to.”
I asked, “Why is my kid calling me by my first name?” They said, “We aren’t making her do that.”
Then I found notes from the step dad signed, “dad.” I ask him, “I thought you weren't telling her to call you dad?” He says, “Well, she calls you Dadda, so I’m Dad.” I told him that he is step dad or his first name. He looked puzzled.
The mom tells me they don’t make her call him dad. Then on the stand in court the judge asked, “does you daughter call your husband dad?” She said, “yes.”
My daughter painted a picture signed, “Sam is the best.” I was hurt but kept my reaction to a minimum. Her mother tells Ava that I wrote that and encourages her to lie about it. Her mother brings it up to provoke me.
These are some things that get said toward the end when a parent has been caught off guard and slowly cut out until he is just a guy again. Not a parent.
My kid used to tell me that at dinner at her mommy’s house, “Mommy would say thanks to you.” I asked, “what for.” She said, “Because without you daddy, mommy would not have met your friend and become her new husband and they wouldn’t have had my new baby brother. Thanks daddy.”
“Isn’t that nice,” I would say.
