Being a single parent isn't "brave." It's irresponsible on your part and extremely damaging to the child.

Often the trope is "I was with this asshole and he just changed."

No, they didn't change. They are exactly the same person you met. You're just seeing the other side of the coin in regards to their personalities.

Children raised by single parents have:

  • A higher chance of being abused or molested.

  • Higher chance of having developmental problems.

  • Are likely to be more aggressive and less sociable.

  • Are more likely to resort to criminal behavior.

  • More likely to live in poverty.

I can go on.

23 of the 27 school shooters grew up without a father in the home.

Single parenthood is an epidemic sweeping this country. There is no reverence when looking for a partner. No gravitas. Instead of looking at it as "looking for the best parent to my child" people are often looking for "how high can my partner make me feel when they're fucking me."

When people get together with "assholes" and "deadbeats" there were some pretty clear signs slapping you across the face showing you what kind of idiot he or she is. This trope that "they just changed" is definitely an outlier. The problem is more that they never changed and continued to be immature, and you looked past that because you are an idiot yourself. It's no wonder so many dumb kids are being raised to be dumb: they're being raised by dumb kids themselves that aren't getting their shit together and continue to blame their ex partners for their plight. And no, plopping your kid into daycare while you work 2 jobs isn't "handling business." Studies show that kids between the ages of 1-5 that go up to 20 hours a week without seeing their mothers display 100% of the symptoms as if they were abandoned by their mother. Kids ages 1-5 don't know that mommy or daddy needs to work etc etc, they just know that you aren't there and their development shows. If you don't think this is a problem look no further than the epidemic of anxiety, ADD, and ADHD that's sweeping the youth of today.

Children need two parents present in their lives, period. Anything else is severely handicapping your kid and short of being a widow/widower you have zero excuse for bringing a kid into a world without a functional 2-parent home.
