Nah, it's because most of the lurkers & subscribers are pretty shallow... meme's are a quick 5 second per "chuckle & upvote" -- quality content takes significantly longer to even just "skim" through.

Basically reddit is designed in such a way that -- at least once the number of new posts per day in a given subreddit exceeds a dozen or two -- the more things get posted, the more the "shallow" stuff gets upvoted.
