If you have little to invest, open a discount brokerage account (Fidelity, Vanguard, Schwab etc)

If you have a lot to invest (more than half a million), consider a full service broker. Although you can still go with option 1 above.

Be a sponge. Learn all you can. You have the internet.

Just starting out, it would be luck rather than skill to beat the market. So consider index funds.

Im with TD Ameritrade. They have a great little section of free ETF's as long as you keep your money with the ETF for 30 days. Then its a free trade. Id personally start with those. They combine a lot of different stocks and sectors. Its a decent gain.

Buffett says that one can't time the market. Over the long-term the most likely strategy for accumulating wealth via the stock market is 'buy and hold'.

Index funds and dividend plays are what I recommend: SPYD, VZ, TXN, etc. Obviously index funds are more diversified and have a lesser inherent risk than a single companies stock. That being said, Verizon hasn't missed a single dividend payout since I bought it in 2011.

If you wanna get speculative, you can always buy a few shares of TSLA and watch the stock swing $100/per share in value every ~60 days. Or get you some of those new weed stocks all the kids are into. TLRY, maybe? XD
