There's this old lady next door. I don't see her often, but she asks if I work every time, and sometimes if I can help her with something that doesn't make much sense. I get that she's lonely, but her son lives with her, some kind of jolly ogre who got divorced right before I moved in. I avoid them as much as possible.

I'm sure the landlords downstairs find me a bit odd, and they have young children, but they have been nice and civilized so far, and not nosy at all.

When I don't have the choice I just say what I'm doing (only the boring stuff) so they lose their interest and think I'm a boring person and they won't want to be around me. In the end it doesn't matter becoz I don't care if they like me or not, actually if they like me, they'll continue to piss me off

I interpreted it as they are lonely and want to have something to care about so they try to care about you.

Asking you a lot of things and getting involved in your life, they want to be engaged cause everything bored them now and perhaps, no one needs them anymore.

My advice is just answered them. After a few days and if you are lucky, they'll pick up and said "oh, the supermarket?" and you just answer with "yes" then leave.

It's hard, you either avoid them by not answering, wear a visible headphone, look as busy as you can or give them a short answer every day. That's a neighbour, you can't really escape them.

I like to smile give generic answers (like "Running some errands and meeting a friend.") and keep moving as if you don't have time to talk. Adding the meeting/appointment, or something about getting in before the places close or get crowded or traffic, etc. allows you to have a sense of urgency and not stop to chat without seeming rude. You can't do it every time, but you can do it a lot. Also, if you have your cell handy, you can always do the fake texting as you walk and not look up, or briefly look up and wave, then back down to your phone as if it's important. Shit like that.
