Just speaking for myself as I've been both married and a bachelor, I dont feel that either of those descriptors have any effect on how much money I make. They do have a huge effect on how much money I keep however.

single allows you to keep more of your earnings in most cases than being married.

I've posted here before that my ex spent more per year on average when we were married than what I now pay for alimony. In my case it was not "cheaper to keep her". Unlike costs in marriage, alimony will end.

I also need less to retire. Based on our spending while married, I estimate that, on average, around 70-80% of every retirement dollar would have been spent by my ex if we were still married. That's huge IMO.

My cost of living is also significantly less, even with my hobbies and toys.

First of all, the data behind it is dubious at best.

What I mean is that it since virtually all men start out their careers/adult lives as "single" -- and it should be inherently obvious that young, individuals just starting on their careers & adult lives tend to make less money, and also to be lumped into that "single" category -- that alone "skews" the data.

Then add on that -- particularly when talking about "lifetime earning" -- the data by definition comes from prior generations.

Second as to the cause(s) vs effect

I guarantee you that (especially in the past) there was both an inherent management discriminatory bias towards (generally speaking) paying married men more and single men less -- much of course depending on the specifics of the marketplace -- that is prices for certain kinds of work are "negotiated" in individual cases based on a variety of factors, including supply & demand, and the expectations of the parties involved.

It is an a priori assertion -- but certainly one that has a firm basis in reality -- that generally speaking, single men CAN manage to live on (and even be content with) a far lower level of income than the typical married man with wife/kids will be capable of doing.

In term of many of life's "necessities" -- food, clothing, etc -- that a single man CAN live (not necessarily WILL, but is capable of living) at a fraction of the cost of multiple people; this is simple math.

Move on to larger life expenses, and, well consider housing alone. A single man has an absolute lower need for space in terms of total volume, he can in fact quite easily and quite happily, live in some "single room" accommodations (i.e. a "studio" apartment); and/or can easily work out some "roommate" agreement to share some larger facility. By contrast the married (with wife & esp. kids) tends to have a more constrained degree of options: it may be possible (on a temporary) basis for his family to live in some "studio"; but that it unlikely to prove satisfactory.

The same is true of other aspects of housing: the single man doesn't generally give a shit what the local "schooling" is like -- and that allows him to ignore that as a factor in determining where to live -- which gives him a larger array of options. Likewise, he has only one person's needs/desires to attempt to satisfy in other regards... this too gives him a larger array of options, which then ALLOW him to make "price/cost" a higher priority.

That also goes on to play out in a similar fashion in other things: Single men certainly can reach a level of happiness & contentment with both lesser "necessities" (again that's just basic math), but likewise with fewer "material goods" -- and not only fewer in total, but less "impressive" and likely less expensive -- this is not only a matter of basic math (though that IS also part of it), but again the social aspect: there is only ONE person to even attempt to "please."

All of those add up together so that...

The single man -- at least the single man who is INTENT on staying single -- has no NEED to labor as hard, to strive to earn as much, to push off to some distant imaginary future his "retirement" from work.

Indeed, if he is truly savvy and frugal, has rather minimalist tastes etc... then a single man (again intent on remaining so; and happily looking forward to it), can probably have a "working career" (wherein he attempts to work VERY hard, earn as much as possible/practical, etc) that is relatively short -- a mere decade or so of his life -- after which he ought to be "set" (again assuming both savvy AND frugality); and can subsequently dial back on both his income, his work, and his likely expenses... and yet be content. (At least presuming his "ego" is likewise sated with such, and he isn't bent on trying to "impress" or "compete" with others in an insipid/inane "accumulation" game.)

By contrast, the married/family man -- or even the single man intent on marrying/having children -- will HAVE to do all of the above... in addition to more & longer. That is, his base necessities will require at LEAST as much work as the single man (he doesn't magically need less food/clothing/housing just because he's willing or intent on being "married"). And he will be highly unlikely to be able to "retire" or end his working efforts in anything like the same timeframe; but will almost certainly NEED to work about a decade or so for each additional individual he adds to his household, be it wife or child.

As for the value of the "contribution" of a "second income" in the form of a working spouse -- that has long ago been debunked, shown to merely increase spending beyond the additional income gained -- and ironically it was debunked by no less a "feminist" than Elizabeth Warren (ironically, probably about the only thing she was ever honest about in her entire life).

Married men are also more likely to spend more time at work since they don't want to come home to a harpy. Besides what does money matter since most of it is going to your wife anyway. You have far more disposable income as a single man than as a married man.

That’s a tough one. I can see both sides of it really.

I just did my taxes and went through a divorce where my returns were looked at very carefully. Since my divorce I am making about 50% more since I have more time. After child support and alimony I am making about the same as when was married. This definitely has to do with just having more time to get work done.

But I could imagine a scenario where being married would increase my income. I could make even more but I know I will get burnt out if I push my weekly hours. I am satisfied with my current lifestyle, but if I was married and was living with money pit AKA a wife, I might be forced to do more weekends etc. no way she would money to “go to waste” like that. It’s just never enough.

You misspelled "plantation". What's more, men who marry are filtered for conformity, responsibility and ability, as well as being selected for betabux. Men who don't bother with marriage are not necessarily failures, but, for such surveys, they find themselves in the same demography as deadbeat crackheads, prisoners, funny farm dwellers as well as starving artists, loners living off the grid, and so on. In some countries and industries, being married still is a requirement for becoming an executive. It's safe to assume that such surveys are completely bogus.
