Because of the fact that the US actually went bankrupt in the 1960s.

Reason we went off the gold standard? Because Vietnam had broken the bank and we didn't have the money to keep blowing up South East Asia. So instead we made a deal with the Saudis. To buy oil, ANYWHERE on this planet, you must FIRST buy the US dollar. You can't hand any petro producing nation kroners, or pounds, or Euros to buy oil. You have to buy dollars with them, and use those. That leads to an inbuilt demand for the US dollar, because everyone needs oil.

It means we can't get off oil, otherwise we wouldn't be able to just create money out of thin air anymore without having Zimbabwe style results. Where, if you remember, you don't buy things by the price of the goods in number, but in terms of how many pounds of million dollar bills it costs to buy an egg. They don't count the currency, they weigh it.

So the TLDR is: in order to be able to bribe wahmen with the promise of free stuff, more free stuff and even more free stuff, we have to maintain a big fuckoff military to kill the living shit out of anyone who would dare go against that policy.

Like a guy named Saddam Hussein, who wanted to sell oil in Euros. Ended up dead on the end of a rope. We didn't care one whit about him feeding people feet first into plastic shredders, but the moment he was prepared to sell oil to anyone who'd defy the embargo and in any denomination other than the US dollar, he was quickly found and hanged.

Momar Gadaffi? We tolerated him. Then he proposed selling oil in any currency, and a gold dinar for Africa which, because it's backed in gold, would become a far more attractive reserve currency than the USD. He was dragged out of a culvert and stabbed in the asshole with a dagger and bled do death from a baying mob.

Think really hard about this for a second: it isn't just rich oil companies who want us on our present path: it's literally the entire world economy balanced on the point of a pin, and a big part of that is the petrodollar. So, for all intents and purposes, we're going to kill every living thing with global warming rather than lose the ability to buy things without having to worry about what things cost.
