Haven’t you noticed how most archetypal stories have a protagonist besting the antagonist? Well, go be that guy, as you GYOW!
Ex: when I was a young teenager, at a school event, where the invited stage band had momentarily taken a break and been kind enough to entertain some of us boys on stage, some girls in my class teased and mocked me for daring to pick up the electric guitar and not knowing how to play it. Sure, I was embarrassed, but resolved to actually learn the discipline – I mean, common, that lead guitar guy was cool! He had long hair and two chics talkin to him! So, much of my teenage years were steeped in learning music; I mostly taught myself, by ear, for hours every day. Several years after high school, by the time I decided to return to college (to complete my STEM studies), I was a studio musician playing many instruments, with several albums recorded in many different music styles, with musicians from all around our world. A friend of a friend ran an Islamic music radio station on the island I grew up on, and that winter, they let us jam on air, live, acoustic -- we played Sublime’s “what I got”, naturally. Turns out someone else heard that, liked it, and later that spring, my metal band got invited to, and then won best rock band, in a “battle of the bands” concert playoff. Our play slot was the last one, at 2am in the morning, in front of a crowd of about 10,000 screaming Asian chics, on an Islamic police station’s academy field, of all places – we won with our rendition of Jamrud’s “Putri”. I remember this distinctly because the band before us nearly won with their rendition of Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name” – did I mention this was an Islamic police academy hosting the event for the island? Well, good times indeed. Oh! And those two girls who teased me? Yeah, I crossed paths with them many years later in life, each struggling in their own single way at the time, and thanked them for their “encouragement” when I was young – because it helped spurn me to develop an amazing improvisational talent that will keep me and my true friends occupied around camp fires or open-mic beer nights for the rest of our lives. Bonus: I now routinely jam and solo harmoniously, by ear, along to any Eric Clapton or Chick Corea song I wish -- It’s super fun! I highly recommend mastering this (or any!) discipline!
tl;dr – Go find a cool hobby. Practice the hell out of it, just for the hell of it. Be patient. Your amazing life will happen, I promise.
