Research: Men Get Credit for Voicing Ideas, but Not Problems. Women Don’t Get Credit for Either

I guess I might start with why should we give 'credit' to anybody for any idea or problem at all? Why do we feel the need to bestow this mythical (and never truly defined) 'credit' to others when they do things?

I can infer from this study that they define 'credit' as the means by which you get something. This is why they can make the argument they do: "If receiving ideas and hearing about problems is beneficial, then unless you give credit to women when they bring up ideas and problems, they will not give you their ideas or point out problems."

But this is a bad analogy, one that is analogous to "if taking a dump is beneficial, then unless you give credit to people when they take a dump, they will take no dump."

See, there are certain things in life that can be consistently relied upon to occur with or without any 'credit' to incentivize them.

And one of the things that will happen, in every workplace, are complaints about problems. It doesn't matter if you asked for a list of problems in your organization or not, you are going to get it, regardless, and you are going to hear about problems both severe and benign, real and perceived, realistic and manufactured, solvable and impossible to solve.

This has happened, and will continue to happen, whether anybody gives credit for pointing out problems or not. I shudder to think what would happen to any business or collective enterprise, like a ship at sea, if we gave 'credit' to people for pointing out problems. The reason we don't is because, if we did that, then nobody would do anything other than point out problems, non-stop, until the company went bankrupt or the ship sank from neglect.

What does require 'credit' is putting up with problems. Ain't nobody going to give credit to some woman--or man, for that matter--for saying that the problem with the air conditioning is making it hard to concentrate on work. What will earn 'credit' is if, knowing that the air conditioning is FUBAR, you nevertheless get the work done, regardless.

Now, concerning ideas, I've noticed that no distinction here in this article is made between good ideas and just ideas. Because, like problems, everybody has ideas, but (like problems), every idea takes time and effort to evaluate. Not all "wouldn't it be great if" ideas are made equally. Some are useful, but many are useless, unfeasible, beyond the scope of possibility, or just clueless.

It may be very important for some woman to come up with an idea like "wouldn't it be great if we offered mindfulness seminars during lunch and break?" But is this the sort of idea that helps the organization? Or is it a distraction?

So the point here is that it's just not ideas that are important; it's useful ideas. Practical ideas. Focused ideas. Thoughtful ideas. Because if the ideas aren't any of those things, then the ideas are even more of a distraction than the problems; you'll be spending more time trying to justify why you can't adopt them to the person who thinks, in all honesty, that the idea ought to be pursued.

Now do women come up with good ideas? Perhaps they do. But I don't think we need to incentivize them to tell us their ideas. They are going to do it whether we ask for them or not, since women, as verbal creatures, take great pleasure in talking about what is important to them, and what ought to be important to everyone. They'll give us their ideas whether we give them 'credit' for doing so or not, if only because visiting, talking, and putting on performances is what they like to do most of all.

But men? They do their duty. They are naturally reserved in organizations for a couple of reasons. In the first place, they are of the mind of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." They are natural crisis managers which would rather handle the known than the unknown. In the second place, they know that, chances are, if they come up with an idea, they will have to do extra work. So they don't come up with ideas haphazardly. They only come up with ideas that are truly necessary, and ones that deserve 'credit' for taking on more than his job description.
