Guess I'm the minority, but I think sometimes it can make your life easier to play the gay card. In terms of it backfiring, it can backfire like any other lie where the details start to unravel. Lies generally lead to more lies and you have to have a story that makes sense. If you do hint that you are gay, you are in between relationships or seeing someone that lives out of town and don't like to talk about it. Keep it simple.

If I was gonna say it I'd say it as

"I'm gay". Not "I'm a gay". Not sure where you are in the world, but at least where I am the first one sounds more like you might actually be gay.

How would that help you in this situation, exactly? The better idea to just be yourself, keep communication to the bare minimum and utmost formal. Show no sign of interest in her personal life. Some girls take the hint and leave you alone, others....not so much.
