You will always have a digital footprint. If you’re not posting, someone is doing it on social media on your behalf. So the best bet is to minimize exposure.

Lurk more, post less.

Don’t share information, and remove information of yourself that is currently present. (Steam information comes to mind.).

Delete Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever.

Use a VPN when dealing with questionable people as well as questionable sites.

Document your interactions with others, collect information on them, and create a dossier in your head or on paper, so you have contingencies in place.

In the digital world, the paranoid survive, and for good reason.

I usually tell people if you must have a Facebook, do not put your employer on there. I know people who’ve been fired after they engaged in an Internet argument and the other person contacted their employer to complain/make shit up to get them in trouble. Doesn’t matter if it’s true.

The fact that people's lives can be ruined because they have an unpopular opinion just blows my mind. It's one thing if you're going off about murdering someone or something, but I'm hearing about guys getting doxxed does for saying shit like "women really fucking suck at everything."

There are companies that help with that, they search and erase as many traces of your digital footprint but, I don't think it is possible to be completley out of the system. unless you can fake your own death and get a new identity, remove yourself from any human habitat and avoid technology...basically, I think the first step is to remove anything that builds your meta-data, like using credit cards, social media, or even having a smartphone, get a regular mobile phone.

Use individual accounts for things that could get you doxxed. Post no, or at least somewhat inaccurate details about yourself. This might be a bit extreme but I have a separate device that I only use on the neighbor's wifi. My work and public stuff is on a different machine. Good luck tracking that back to me without some serious work and possibly a search warrant.
