So Harvard has conducted the longest happiness study in history sometime last year. They interviewed men from about 70 years ago, then kept interviewing them as they got to old age. They also spoke to the subjects family, wife, friends etc

Their assessment is that happiness and longevity are most directly tied with having close relationships with your family and friends, and not due to genetics

So pretty much loneliness is the biggest contributor to unhappiness. They mentioned that having a wife/significant other, especially later in life is very important

However, they did say that if you are always arguing with your wife and can’t stand her, people who never married actually will outlive the ones in a bad marriage
