He honestly has to, because he's in the same boat as Rachel Dolezal; the illusion is shattered the moment it's called into question. At this point, he's WAY too deep into this position to back out now; he'd lose what little credibility he has left if he just admitted he was white as the driven snow.

He's not a journalist, he's a glorified blogger, and as such his persona is what his career is built around, not talent or skill. He's fucked either way, because either he admits it was all a lie so that he could capitalize on minority privilege, or he maintains the status quo and loses his credibility a piece at a time.

I mean, look, I'm a biologist, so I know that in the truest sense there's no such thing as 'race'; there's a spectrum of biological subsets that everyone has percentages of based on their individual lineages. My dad's side are all mongrels as far as ancestry goes. My mother's side are Portuguese, have been for like a billion generations, but centuries ago the Moors invaded and occupied the Iberian peninsula for a LONG time, which means if you go far enough back I've got a little black blood in me. I don't consider myself black because of that, and I know on my dad's side it's all but certain there's some black blood, and I don't consider myself black because of that either. There CAN be an uncanny valley where an argument can be made that a mulatto-type situation's going on, but Talcum X CANNOT make this case.

Well, don't get me wrong; like I said race is basically a spectrum where some are more demonstrably part of what we colloquially call a 'race', so you can have someone who has, say, a great grandfather who was indisputably black, but every other member of the lineage is indisputably white. We can't, as a society, break people down by percentages: if we choose to apply a race label on someone, we need to state a singular label. For most of the time this doesn't even matter, but it's not like we can go around saying "I'm a quarter Asian, a quarter black, and half white", most people usually just look in a mirror and ask themselves what group they most outwardly look like.

Does Shaun King have black blood in his lineage? Who the fuck knows, but it's clear that any he has is diluted by enough alternate bloodlines to invalidate his claim. He COULD solve the conundrum once and for all by doing one of those genetic tests that tells you what prominent race-markers he has, but I suspect he'll never do that because he'd be worried about the results.

I just want to state for the record that I'm talking in terms of biology; my social feelings on this topic are a lot less sturdy, but it's what I've observed over a long period of time. It's very easy to have a point made about race twisted into something it's not, and I just say this for anyone else coming into this thread.
