I would add a little nuance to the point you are making.

External validation as a goal is worthless and fool-hardy. However, many of the things I want or need come from other people. (Money, sex, friendship, discourse etc). Thus, feedback in the form of validation or it’s opposite serve as guideposts for the effectiveness of my actions and words.

I’ll give a concrete example that happened yesterday. I’m on a business trip and staying at a hotel. For a multitude of reasons, I lift weights. I like being strong, I like feeling good, I like having sex with women. I used the shitty joke of a hotel gym (at least they have dumbbells) to the best of my ability and got a good-enough workout in. As I left I passed the front desk and Yvonne, a hot but slightly too thick Latina made too much eye contact and I smiled and said “weight room works”. She smiled and gave me the head to toe look and said “I can see that” I don’t push myself in the gym for validation, but I’m not the lest unhappy about getting that feedback either. It felt good and gave me some external evidence that it’s working as I intended.

So much this, do what makes you happy not what makes you look happy in other people's eyes.
