What a silly thing to say. It's normal to be self-conscious if people talk shit to you, grow some thick skin, it comes with age young man. Unless you're directly attacked or if your loved ones are attacked - please, don't prove your machismo. If you or loved ones are attacked, fight back and try to inflict at least twice the damage. Also, consider Judo, it's the easiest martial art to learn and very effective.

Edit: I too, grew up fearing the law and my father's belt, so I shied away from trouble, but what always worked for me was this principle: You can call me any names you want, and good luck with that - but if you physically touch me, god have mercy on your face because I won't :)

Act as if you're the person you want to be. If you want to be confident, visualise it and then act like it. It won't happen overnight but if you act as if you deserve respect then people will give it to you. Eventually you won't be acting any more and it will be the real you, you won't have to act. Good luck.

The best advice I can give is to develop a poker face / stoicism whereby whatever happens, it is water off a duck's back to you. If someone says something upsetting, never let them see fear or shock in your eyes or your face. It doesn't bother you. They have no power to upset you. It doesn't matter if you feel fear inside - just don't show it outwardly.
