I buy groceries approximately twice a month. Every now and then I see someone with a sign asking for financial assistance.

I never give money unless I'm getting something back, such as fundraising chocolate. I tell them "no" on my way in to the store, purchase an extra item, or two, and then give them said item/s on my way out.

They are grateful for the gesture. Every once in a while the person disappears so I go home with a huge jar of peanut butter and bread.

Today was different.

I saw a woman, who is about 20-25 years old, with a newborn strapped to her. She wasn't handicapped or disabled in any way. Not overweight or resembled any form of drug abuse. She was panhandling with a cardboard sign outside of the store.

The thing that bothered me is that she is able-bodied, very young, looks like she showered within the past 24-hours, and decided to make this her daily effort towards income-gaining.

Honestly, I would not have even given her food. She was too "together" for my sniff test.

I did see a guy give her money as I walked by though- the kind that folds. I don't know her story, just reporting from what I saw.

Have you seen women panhandle before who you can clearly see isn't destitute? Divorce verdicts don't count.
