Give your mom a knife hand and a simple statement, "I'm fucking busy.". If she gives you grief, repeat it.

Under other circumstances I would say they do it in order to break your frame, create a negative impact on your confidence and thus, make you more controllable.

In the scenario you describe, though... I think the magic words we have to look here at are "son" and "daughters".

It is a fact that mothers treat sons and daughters quite differently and with very different expectations. Sure, fathers do that as well, fathers do treat sons and daughters differently, but at least according to my observation; the effect is not that drastic and quite often they are aware of it and try to mitigate it.

Just ask yourself, how were/are your female family members, your mother; grandmothers, maybe aunts, treating you? Feminists and media never get tired to stress how much girls get conditioned and disciplined into obedient little housewife material in the traditional family.

That statement could not be further from the truth nowadays. Girls usually get a lot more leeway than boys and boys are much more conditioned and trained in order to fulfil a certain social role later in life.

Ask yourself, how often did you have a problem, went to a female family member and got a response like...
"Boys don't cry!"
"A true indian does not know pain."
"You are a boy, you need to be tough."
"You don't want your sisters to see you that weak!"
"A true man figures out how to solve his problems alone!"

And then ask yourself how often you were forced to deal with some petty problem your sisters had. I mean, the situation you describe right now is a paramount example.

I have a sister, I love her more than I can desribe, my parents are the best parents one can have, but it is still a fact that I was always the fall guy when push came to shove. In case of doubt, it always was my fault. Even in case of no-doubt-at-all it was my fault often enough, simply by definition. She went on a rage fit and was smashing things or completely violated every single rule our parents had? Well, of course this was my fault, I am her older brother, so I should have had an eye on her and hold her back, right?

And it was a given that my sisters needs were put over mine. I was her personal baby sitter, bodyguard, driver.

And you need to be aware of one thing. Your mother might have very different expectations about the future of you and your sister. A lot of mothers let their daughters do whatever they want, but are a lot more rigid when it comes to their sons... because they see their sons as the potential caretakers when they are old.

When you read old books, it is quite common to read about that bright, aspiring young man who "has" to give up on his dreams and begins to work in a crap job that makes him unhappy, because the father of the family died and from that moment on, that young man "had to take care of his mother and his sisters". The oh-so suppressed females of the family then do nothing more than to sit on their asses, knit and wait for a man that marries and further takes care of them. And even if they were married, well, then there is still the mother he needs to care for.

And quite often, this is what women still expect from their sons. My guess is that your mother is not explicitly trying to harass you and to keep you from your studies. She might just be unconsciously acting according to her inner set of rules and expectations that tell her that the future of her daughter is more important than yours and that you being successful in school and later on in life might actually endanger her hold over you and thus, your status as prospective caretaker.

Your mother is hearing and understanding you just fine, it's just that she might not be able to actually give a fuck.

Speaking Japanese, or any other language for that matter, is a great method to make people leave you alone. Even if the other person knows you understand what they’re saying, eventually they get frustrated and leave. Works every time.
