Personally, I think it made more sense when the young maidens would be married to older men, because you had the benefits of high fecundity in the woman, and the man had more resources, was emotionally calmer, and not just driven by lust. He either had prospects, a family who also had money, or he himself did. The man was more settled, and had the resources to provide for a family.

It had its own problems, but unlike today, where children are a couple of accidents with single mothers, it probably worked out better in the long run for everyone. Families had resources and stability.

Also marriage wasn't about sex and love and oneitis like it is now. Marriage was an entirely different animal.

But these days? Fuck that noise.
