I listened to the first few minutes, so maybe I'm judging prematurely, but this seems like a lot of verbiage reaching for an argument. His interpretation of technological progress is flawed. For example, computing power isn't necessarily analogous to progress. Far more basic but fundamental practices and ideas in human history, like agriculture or organised labour, were just as critical to our development as a species. In other words, without computing power I wouldn't be posting this from my smartphone, but without the first steps of learning how to harvest food on a large scale, I'd probably be toiling on a field somewhere.

Even then, you have to be very careful about what we define as 'progress', especially on biological terms. He seems to be implying that biological 'progress' has lagged compared to engineering, but by what metric? Medicine has great examples of things which were originally perceived as progress that backfired down the line. I'd argue that if any biological 'progress' has been made it's been in terms of public health and improvement of living conditions.

Maybe someone else can provide a summary, but I don't think I'll be listening to this one all the way through.
