Help with socializing and friends?

a good step would be just getting comfortable with silence. you dont always have to be talking, especially if you dont feel like you have something to say. i have had friends who would say something like "nobody is talking, this is awkward" when hanging out in a group and just relaxing. truthfully the only thing that made it awkward was someone saying they felt awkward. i didnt feel uncomfortable with the silence at all. good conversation comes naturally and just flows. periods of silence is fine a lot of the time. forced conversation is the only awkward thing. i say just try to relax about it, if you genuinely dont feel uncomfortable with it other people will sense that and not worry about it either. and when everyone is relaxed, good conversation happens naturally

I agree with the other commenter that you should try to be comfortable with silence.

If you like to read and have a decent memory then read a lot, especially news and current events. Read opinion pieces and reviews of books, movies, music albums and such. If the conversation drifts into something that you read about then you have something to comment on, and ask others their opinion to see how it compares to what you read.

Go easy on the alcohol because you will start to talk without a filter. As the saying goes, better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

If you are in school, join one or more clubs to meet people with some common interest. Definitely join the debate team because it will force you to develop your speaking skills.
