Reading Cormac McCarthy's "Child of God," I have come across a multitude of truly beautiful, shrewd, and poignant observations that continue to stick in my mind. Here are but three:

  1. All the trouble I ever was in, said Ballard, was caused by whiskey or women or both. He'd often heard men say as much.

  2. You ort to be proud, Lester, that you ain’t never married. It is a grief and a heartache and they ain’t no reward in it atall. You just raise enemies in ye own house to grow up and cuss ye.

  3. I’m from Pine Bluff Arkansas and I’m a fugitive from the ways of this world. I’d be a fugitive from my mind if I had me some snow.

McCarthy is a rare gem in the ever-blander scenery of the literary world. He is not prone to prevarication. His prose is intrepid, his observations pierce through the superficial layers of the mundane, he is an authentically strong writer. I highly recommend any of his works.

Have a blessed day, brothers.
