Virtually everyone who has tried to describe deep solitude has said something similar. “I am nothing; I see all,” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. Lord Byron called it “the feeling infinite”. The American mystic Thomas Merton said that “the true solitary does not seek himself, but loses himself”.

I can sympathize with this guy somewhat (aside from the 27 years of burglarizing houses). For people who find more peace inside of their own minds than from other people, solitude is the closest thing to bliss one can experience while still living. People with the "social animal"/"herd mentality" conclude that the desire for solitude is inherently defective in people, which is especially peculiar today in which every "lifestyle" is to be glorified and praised, except for the one in which you don't vomit out your every thought and feeling of every waking hour for public consumption via social media.

To be fair i wouldn't say he survived alone. He routinely broke into summer homes and stole food and propane. Which is how he got caught.

Yeah, although without a doubt life like that is hard, let's face it, the story went from "you make your own, no handouts", to "breaking summer houses every night.

He was very dependent upon a functioning society to keep him alive. (Much like a city is totally dependent upon the country side.) I think the bigger question is if you could get by, be challenged, and not work would you?

Guess "The stranger in the woods" is the next book I'm gonna read.

Edit. After reading the book and thinking about it, I arrived at the conclusion that this is a good example of survivor bias. The statistics of homeless men dying of sickness or starvation should discourage people of trying this. The book was entertaining and you can finish it in a week tops.
