Yes, this is exactly right. I had cable for 10 years at a house I just moved from. I had to fight every year to get the bill down and was still paying more than I wanted. They told me they couldn't offer much because I wasn't a new customer (nice, treat your new customers better than one who has paid you for 10 years).

When I moved, I cut service and told them I didn't like their price creep. Really I just wanted them to cut the service because I wouldn't be there anymore, but took the opportunity to bitch about their policies. They switched me to the customer retention department. Suddenly, they were bound and determined to keep me and I was getting my cable bill cut by $100, had them offering premium channels and twice as fast internet (from 50mbps to 100).

I still told them no and cut service, as I was moving, but they didn't know that.

Anyway, $45 is pretty cheap. I don't know if you can get it much lower. Call them and tell them you want to cut service and see what they offer. But you have to mean it and you might lose it.

I'm on spectrum and am weary of their lowered prices and sudden name popping up, buying Time Warner and all of that. I smell government money.

At any rate, you're lucky if you live in an anti-yuppie area where you can still get uncapped internet for $45. A lot of yuppie areas charge you ridiculous rates for pitiful caps at poor speeds. Yuppies with their iPhones pay it thinking they're trendy and getting a deal and can use wifi.
