So the truth is that guy was a mess. Very entertaining, and at his core he has the right ideas, but drowned it in booze if his writing reflects his life at all.

I pull one of his books out from time to time and soak up the pure crazy. I never want to go all the way to where he was, but at least part way once in a while makes life, well a life worth living
