By the way, that's the word my sister used when she got married and quit her job: "retired". Not a penny in savings, just a wedding ring.

Seriously. I used to be polite when the subject of marriage came up in conversation. Now I'm not polite about it and in some cases the other person seemed relieved that they were no longer obligated to defend the illusion.
