Yeah, so in high school I had a female math teacher who had zero knowledge of actual math. She was 'teaching' us trig. Basically I was half way asleep in my desk. I suspected she called on me in front of everyone to try to embarrass me by asking me how to do one of the problems. I looked at the board for a second, gave her the correct answer and tried to go back to sleep. She started barking at me that I had the wrong answer and I needed to come to the board to work it out. So I did, and got the same answer. Eventually after class she actually got the dean in the room and was threatening to kick me out of her class. The dean looked at the work, looked at her, then pointed out she was on the wrong page in the answer key. He flipped a page and pointed out I had it right. I spent the rest of that class, which was my senior year, in a study hall in the deans office, though.

It wasn't an entirely bad deal, though. I blew through the workbook for the class in a week and spent the remainder of the time getting ahead in other classes.

What's interesting is that in Scandinavian countries, a Master's degree is required teach, but the positions are extremely competitive and quite prestigious due to better pay and conditions.

Putting aside the saints and genuinely talented folks that teach because they want to make a difference, I'd say: if public school teachers were valued at all, they'd attract a higher calibre of candidate.
