No matter who he loves more, what matters is who needs him more? The "strong, independent" wife who could easily survive in the world outside their house or the kids that need food and shelter etc etc. He might love his wife more that's not completely impossible but I feel sure he neglects his children's needs a lot. His wife could survive without him but the children would not.

It's weird that he loves her more but I think what we're looking at isn't love at all. He's enamored with her probably due to her being black whereas the children are part him / white and he's not particularly interested in that.

This isn't out of the ordinary as many guys get married to a trophy wife for whatever reason that never wanted wife / kids. Especially in multi-racial cases like this.
