You might be able to get a basic trade or tools job, but not engineering. I have three friends who decided to become an engineer, and I've learned three things:

You need 5 years of schooling before you're anything but a CAD bitch.
The field is highly oversaturated. (Hell, it's even the #1 keyword used in men's profiles on dating sites)
Unless you're doing something interesting and unique in the field, I've heard the work is very uninspiring, even though you make great money.

It will get you a job if you can learn it, and get in well with the instructors.

Most of those instructors did the trade for years before teaching it, so they will have assloads of relevant contacts in the industry.

aero/mech E here.

i guess im a unicorn. my job is amazing and rewarding and high
paying and blah blah blah. it was a long road. 5years of college.
been given a shit-ton of autonomy and inspiration to make things.

sitting here typing this up from a lab that work provides with
3D printers, CNC carvers, etc etc just so we can fuck around.

i can say that before college, being able to MIG weld got me in
the door of most manuf. facilities. understanding machines
and being able to learn how to use them is the discipline.

learn to be proficient on an old amada RG100 and you could
probably work in any state at any time. they would probably
create a work-shift just to get you in with their shop. i digress.
theres good training, but then theres being knowledgeable.

Yeah, lots of good buzzwords there. Not sure if it alone will get you a job, but it definitely seems worthwhile knowledge.

It's solid "base" knowledge that will potentially benefit you in the future in any number of possible positions.

But... (you knew there was going to be a "but" right?) training is often of significantly LESS value than people imagine; what really matters when it comes to those fields is actual hands-on experience.

Now that doesn't mean you shouldn't do the training... just don't fall into the trap of thinking that the "training" coursework will be sufficient; do EVERYTHING you can to leverage yourself into some "internship" position at a real company that is doing real production... even if you're just being a "gopher" and/or floor sweeper, get something on your resume that shows you've worked at a REAL firm. That will put you miles ahead of the majority of your classmates.

I work in construction. This should be able to get you a job, and probably not at the complete lowest pay level. Most jobs train their employees to do tasks, so anything you already have is a bonus for them. Construction is starting to be back on the rise again, and I know the trades are looking for good employees. Be a good employee and a company will train you to do whatever.
