Friedman also had no intent on having or helping a free society.

The take-away lesson here is that it's a free MAN, not free society, that is the ultimate goal.

You have not lived in a free society for the last 500 years, I promise you that. 20 years? Nothing. Nothing has changed except migration of jobs but the actual level of corruption and enslavement hasn't changed except to add some fancy weapons for local policing like chemical and electrical weapons of torture and/or killing (depending how you use it; believe me, you can drown a person in pepper spray if you're determined and the burning reaction wasn't enough to already kill a person, sprayed down into the lungs at 1 inch distance)

1984??

Son, we hit that phase decades ago. We're in a much worse time now. Now the punishments and tortures are increased and the acceptance of society is complete for it. It's not just fear: now there's shame and for many sheep even PRIDE in making sure people go away to get tortured or beaten or killed for stepping out of line, surveillance is far, far more pervasive than 1984's model and now people are shamed, shunned for not sharing their information with a wide social media audience (location, habits, feelings, work history, income) as well as absolutely sharing with police of all sorts, like dumb little sheep.

They're proud to give up their freedom. No one in 1984 was actually proud of it like this.
