He won an out-of-court settlement with the argument: "if they want to have women-only hours, let them, but don't expect your male membership to have to pay for those hours."

I consider this a win for equality. It would have been better to drag this out in court, IMO, but he filed suit, he gets the call.

In other words, I fail to see the problem. He sued for discrimination, and won. It was the right call.

One of the most popular arguments for women to have their cake and eat it too is that they are "behind" in this or that and need "encouragement" to make their "participation" equal to men. The question is, why are men suddenly responsible for encouraging women? Is it some kind of reparation for the patriarchy of the past?

I'm torn over this. From a public health perspective, the statement from the council is correct, in the UK women do tend to participate less in physical activity at all ages. I can see why this might have seemed a good idea initially.

Yet the guy who sued is also correct that it is a discriminatory business model. The problem seems to be in the proposed solution. The idea of having women pay an optional additional cost if they wish to attend during those hours seems pretty reasonable, but may run counter to the purpose of trying to get more women exercising.

I do also agree with the guy, the justification for having women's only sessions needs to be stronger to make sense of excluding men at peak hours. Giving a broad public health reason isn't enough.

It leads me to think of women's only self defence or martial arts classes. They make total sense as women pay a one off fee to participate, it's special purpose, no men lose anything by having the class run, and the justifications are sound (obvious physical differences). That model makes more sense to me.
