Heres the thing:

If nothing exists before birth and after death (or before and after the universe) and yet, somehow, given an infinite length of time, you still managed to come into existence, then that tells you something about "nothingness".

It tells you that even if there is total nothingness youre still able to spontaneously exist. And seeing as there is no god to prevent it, you will most likely come into existence again at some infinite point in the future. In fact, given an eternity youre going to relive this life over and over again.

Better still, given an eternity you might live a life that appears in every way the same as this one but with varying differences. You may live a life that appears so different it cant even be said to be the same.

Welcome to the multiverse, where there is no purpose to life other than to explore an infinite number of variations for all eternity. There is no progress, just discovering how many ways you can totally win or fail.

The point of life is to enjoy it while keeping God's laws, and loving God and others. If you can do that, you get to live forever. You don't take stuff with you though, only your character. But a good character + forever means you can build and get LOADS more stuff. And way better stuff, too.

I come into contact with the elderly on a regular basis. Some of my work takes me into nursing homes. That's where it hits me the most - a life time of work and accumulation of stuff boiled down to a couple of photo's, a chair, a bed, a bedside table and a television.

Other times I've entered homes of legit horders. I'm talking about almost every square inch taken up including boxes stacked to the roof.

Then there's the times I'm helping people move. As I'm loading the truck I'm thinking about asking if they want this taken to their new house or the tip.

For all their pretentions (on par with Vegans) I do appreciate the minimalist ideal. Only have what you need or love & People / experiences over possessions. I personally am not at this stage but it's a concept I try to adopt

Epicureanism

The philosophy originated by Epicurus flourished for seven centuries. It propounded an ethic of individual pleasure as the sole or chief good in life. Hence, Epicurus advocated living in such a way as to derive the greatest amount of pleasure possible during one's lifetime, yet doing so moderately in order to avoid the suffering incurred by overindulgence in such pleasure. The emphasis was placed on pleasures of the mind rather than on physical pleasures. Therefore, according to Epicurus, with whom a person eats is of greater importance than what is eaten. Unnecessary and, especially, artificially produced desires were to be suppressed. Since learning, culture, and civilization as well as social and political involvements could give rise to desires that are difficult to satisfy and thus result in disturbing one's peace of mind, they were discouraged. Knowledge was sought only to rid oneself of religious fears and superstitions, the two primary fears to be eliminated being fear of the gods and of death. Viewing marriage and what attends it as a threat to one's peace of mind, Epicurus lived a celibate life but did not impose this restriction on his followers.
