What does it mean when another man (your boss) has more say over the success of a man's marriage than the man himself?

It means that your marriage, as a man, is never under your full control; everybody else (your wife, your employer, your society) holds cards as well, and no amount of good cards the man holds can work, should the deck get stacked against him.

The only time a man has full say over his marriage is when he decides to do it in the first place. After that, it isn't up to him so much.
