i think neither of you are wrong.. a mans time is best spent doing things that fufill him. maybe for you that is travel, and for him that is building and refining his skillsets. then again, maybe he doesnt actually get fufillment from it, and he is just grinding away his years so he can support those women financially and maintain his lifestyle as a provider. to me, thats where the disconnect would be. to each their own though. personally im not concerned at all about how other people spend their time, and i certainly dont care how anyone feels about how i spend mine. live and let live

I had a similar conversation with a friend once, back in my early twenties.

He was heavily in debt, working at a real job, and saving every possible penny in order to buy a nice motorcycle. It'd be awesome and women like bikes, he said.

I was debt free and working short-term shit jobs between trips abroad.

He gave me lots of shit about responsibility, and getting a real job, and being a real man, and impressing women. I told him it would be stupid to blow his cash reserves on a motorcycle when he was already in so much debt. He told me it's stupid to work shit jobs and travel around the world.

There came a day when he woke up, got dressed, and went to bankruptcy court. He'd lost his job when the recession hit and made it about three months before going broke and losing everything, including his house. That same day he was in bankruptcy court, I woke up on a beach in the South Pacific.

It took him about six years to even start getting his life back together. I spent those six years living like a National Geographic documentary. Go figure.

We drifted apart in the end. Last I heard, he married a single mother, works full-time, and became religious. I'm still debt free, work part-time jobs, money in the bank, wondering where I'll go next.

I suppose my point here is to just do whatever you want and not worry about it. Travel doesn't have to be expensive. It only gets expensive when you travel with a woman, or travel LIKE a woman. If you're a fancy-free young man without debt, just work as you go. I did, and I made more money than I spent.

My old friend might become wealthy in the end, or he might get divorce looted and knocked squarely back to the first rung again.

I might go somewhere stupid like Angola and get my ass shot off.

You make your choices and you take your chances. As long as they're YOUR choices, you'll be doing alright.

I've never understood travel. The placed that you can inexpensively get to aren't too much different from home so there isn't much point. On the other hand places that are different require a significant investment in money and time. So what is the draw? I'm genuinely interested in hearing why people get so excited about traveling.

My grandpa backpacked across Europe in the 1940s he said it was really loud and Germans weren't t very friendly.

Travel does have the possibility of broadening one's perspective, as you see how different cultures live. However, the increasing homogenization of the world lessens this effect. It is also greatly decreased if you stay in luxury hotels, go on group tours, or focus museum peeping; as your interaction with the different culture will be minimal. Business travel to foreign lands is awesome, as you really interact with the locals and see the every-day differences in their culture. Hosteling, or staying in B&Bs/pensiones/zimmers, beats hotel chains, as does going to off-the-beaten-path destinations and activities.

I don't really think most people travel to have their horizons broadened, though. I think it is usually about status, indolence, novelty and sensory gratification. This is the "just a set of eyes" phenomenon.

Tibetan master Chogyam Trungpa used to scoff at people who would travel to "lie on dirt." Not a big fan of sunbathing, that one.

lol @ supporting a woman 100%, omg. And he has the nerve to call you a set of eyes and all he is is a wallet and a place to stay for lazy worthless women. I'm a MGTOW who loves to travel as well as a man that likes to maximize my skills and be the best person he can be, without being too much of a crutch to a woman who isn't on my level. Too many people in society imo have this black or white train of thinking to where they have to be this way or that way. I think pitting someone who loves to travel/experience against someone who likes to "maximize skills" is a silly idea in that a lot of times those types of men are one in the same, I'm living proof of that.

He could be right if you didn't have unique experiences while traveling but that isn't the case and right on the second bit if he didn't support two leeches. That's not optimal bro. Its baggage. And its also preference. Some people prefer working less and enjoying their time more. To me depending on the job and the pay and location, 30-50 hours a week is optimal. No more no less. I want to be able to make 6 figures working 30 hours but enjoy my work so much I could be inclined to want to work 50.

I just enjoy the adventure of going somewhere I've never been. Uncertainty and the spontaneity. Just find it fun. If I had a bunch of money I would just spend it on traveling. Big houses or insane sports cars don't really do it for me.

Maximizing skills doesn't have to translate into being workhorse -- think creative or athletic pursuits -- and there's nothing wrong with finding satisfaction (or ego validation as you put it) in developing your abilities.

I don't understand travel either. I value my money and my time, so experiencing a loss of money or time is a huge downer. Spending a couple thousand on a trip that wasn't the best trip ever would just make me feel angry and frustrated. There are a million better things I could have done with that money.

Your friend sounds like a simp. While having those things is important, there is nothing wrong with traveling and experiencing other cultures and traditions. It opens your eyes from your small hometown bubble. The other thing is as long as you're making sure to see things other than the tourtisty attractions and actually meet with local natives there is so much to be gained from such an experience.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the experience of travel and being well cultured. But when I saw the title it made me think of those empty eyed girls who just say they just want to travel the world and what not. When I hear that sometimes I don't believe them.
