Homogamy? I've rarely if ever seen an equally accomplished/status couple. It has never been my personal experience either - I've always been more educated, more athletic, more physically attractive and better tempered than any ex.

The friend-zone has only one cause: women feel they are of higher value than men they put in the friend-zone and put them there on standby. They are stand-in ATM, stand-in chauffeur, stand-in boyfriend (even if only for appearances), stand-in handyman, all on standby. She feels validated for having the man on hand and having more is just having backups.

A man who isn't lower value will not let her shit on him and will walk away. A man who's being fooled temporarily because he's dumb, or inexperienced, or trusting, or she's excessively sexual in how she keeps him in the friend-zone, is temporarily of lower value but as soon as he figures his shit out and walks away, he no longer is.

Have you read feminist sites when some poor chump asks for dating advice? When the commentors get over their outrage than some guy would actually ask a women out, their advice is to basically embrace the friendzone.

Purge all expectations of romance and sex from your mind. Those expectations make you into NiceGuy™ and are a very bad thing. Just be a good friend to her and treat her as a Regular Human Being (whatever that means). Then if she never develops a romantic interest in you, it wasn't meant to be and the main thing is you have a good friend.

What if you never get romance or sex using the strategy? Then obviously you must still have some bad NiceGuy™ gendered expectations. Stop it! Women aren't there for the amusement of men.

But why is it feminist women often seem to be attracted to misogynist jerks? Stop it! How dare you question a women's right to be attracted to who she wants. That's NiceGuy™ thinking right there.
