My mother was, and is, pretty amazing. Very independent, so I wouldn't say we're close, but we have a strong, deep relationship. I love her very much.

Both my parents were abusive. Dad more so than Mom. Mom left my dad and refused to fight for custody claiming “She had no money to her name”

I don't hate my mother. She was the stereotypical Christian African woman: big on family, wants grandchildren (basically tried to program me from childhood to get a wife and multiple kids), stays home, strict on schoolwork, refuses to reason with her children (expects complete and blind obedience) and so on.

So I don't hate her but I find it extremely difficult to converse with her

I don't hate my mother, she's just annoying as hell. I cut off contact about twenty years ago and that's it. We're both better off without each other.
