Japan has been like that a while. The traditional sense of love and relationships is almost dead, and primarily a concept exclusive to men there.

Relationships, both male and female but mostly female, have been monetized into an entire industry.

One big cause, among many, is due to the extreme work environment. There is no way to have functional relationships outside of work co-workers because many work 6 days out of the week, and many sleep at their desk rather then going home due to exhaustion. Not to mention the social pressures at work, and corporate pressures that push people not to even take time off, or sick leave.

How would you have time to have a relationship if you're at your home one day out of the week?

For women they can literally make a living giving out the girlfriend experience because the normal is simply made impossible.

There are way more reasons than just this alone, and many more factors that go into it, but that's the watered down quickie reddit version.
