Here is a brief synopsis of the “lesson”
We are passed out an article.
Teacher asks class “raise your hand if you’re book has a female protagonist”
(90% of hands go up)
We then read the article and it’s about how dystopian literature “empowers young girls” and how “modern culture is dominated by white male protagonists” (keep in mind how 90% of students had female protagonists)
We then analyzed a couple clips from the movie Mulan. Teacher talks about how Mulan was forced into a gender stereotype by her village, then breaks it by going to war. It then proceeds to show the male warriors, who pick their nose, are grimy and bare footed, and start brawling and fighting for no reason like apes.
Teacher asks how they portray each role, and the class agrees that both were extreme stereotypes. Teacher then describes how Mulan becomes a powerful women and joins the army, breaks the stereotype etc, and never mentions the male stereotyping again.
