Some background info: 18, was into TRP since around 14 but started smoking weed at 15/16 and slowly regressed into a much worse person; lazy, tired, emotionless, etc. Currently incredibly depressed, still addicted to weed, and working at a body shop to be trained as a manager with a shit boss. I feel like and I have a giant brain fog over my head and kinda feel like an emotionless zombie.
Now, to the main question. My career goals are to further my mechanical skills to the point where I'm able to fabricate my own parts and sell them, start a YouTube channel where I build my own cars and have the ability to finance them. The long-term goal is open up my own shop. I have plenty of cinematography skills as I worked an internship at a video production company.
Working at this body shop has been simultaneously great and shitty at the same time. I have a boss who's a hard ass who gets irritated, then realizes I'm not fucking up and gets calm. He also is really really shitty at explaining things, and because of the weed I feel like I've become more and more timid to where I can't properly articulate myself in the workplace. Yet when I'm not working at the office with him breathing down my neck I get to work on amazing cars and get practical experience. And I'm learning a lot about how businesses work. Currently, he's hiring a 2nd person to be in my position, yet I'm hoping if I stay I can try and become more of a managerial role and put in that work to try and buy out the shop from him as he retires.
The other option is going down out of state and moving with my parents. Thankfully my parents are in a financially good enough position to buy a house with a shop because my dad is getting an exotic car. I'd have to work and get the tools myself, yet I already have gotten a lot of tools along with videography equipment to start a YouTube channel wherever I go, yet a shop would be much better than an apartment garage. The plan would be start a machining apprenticeship half year program down there, build one of my cars and every once and awhile drive back and forth from where I'm located currently to where I'm moving to for the purpose of working with some of my friends who in the long run are gonna be apart of this channel, then I'd move back up here after completing the apprenticeship to go to college for automotive engineering.
I'm in a weird position, because even though I have the support network of my family, I have the skills up here, as along with the body shop I would also have my friends who want to start this YouTube channel with me and already have great and unique build platforms, along with much more skill than I have. If I move out of state I'm still in a pretty good position to work with them because it's only a 4 or 5 hour drive, but I don't get any of the business skills, or the body work skills which is a big part of fabrication. Yet I'm worried if I stay up here, I'll be stuck in the working position, unable to work myself outta this and only have this body shop, not my more ambitious goals, as I'd feel like it'd be hard to balance YouTube and college and shop job yet that would be the fastest way to get everything I wanted all in one big package, with just 5 years of hard work.
So, open to suggestions, should I stay up here? Go down with the family? I've also considered trying to make both work, since the body shop is still a pretty small business I could ask my boss to work 4 days a week longer hours and 3 days the next week, and those other days I go back down to where my parents are. This would give me the most time to work on my own projects and further my skills while also giving me the skill net up here and the connections into the car scene. Yet that's pretty ambitious too as that's a 5 and a half hour drive every week. Thoughts?
