The average family consists of...

  • 1 woman

  • 0 - 1 man (he may not be there, he may be partially there but also with other women, he may be fully there, and there may be two or multiple men who don't make up a full 1 in total)

  • Kids (always the woman's kids. Often not the man's kids, due to previous relationships or cheating)

  • Mother's extended family more often than the father's

This "nuclear family" is centered around the woman and the woman's needs to provide for her children. It is therefore more her responsibility to look after than anyone else's.

If the man were to have a "family", it would not look like this. The man's family would look like a collection of women who were his to a greater or lesser degree, a collection of children who may be his, and other men who are relatives with families he helps out with on rare occasion or who partially or totally report to him. The man in this way has his own kingdom or is part of one, which looks more like a flowing network of people than anything else.
