I think when people say "Nice guys finish last." they actually mean: guys who hide their interest for months upon months only to send a drunken message when the girl is in a breakup finish last. Being a huge nerd who only goes out to buy mountain dew and tendies doesn't help either.

Assholes, ie. dark triad personalities were there is actual evidence that some of them are considered more attractive, finish despite the more unsavory parts of their personality. Having no fear of rejection, seeking thrill and having extreme self confidence do help in actually approaching women. The whole gaslighting, violent outbursts and lacking empathy show much later and are detrimental.

I think it pretty much comes down to throwing it against the wall and seeing what sticks. If someone is sucessful romanticly or sexually it's mostly numbers. Looks and status certainly help having more sucess. I think status has diminishing returns and boils down to having your shit together: live on your own, having a stable income that leaves room for activities, no drug addictions...

I am not convinced that PUA techniques have a significant influence and seeing the stats of famous PUA's it would take hundreds of approaches to make a noticable difference.
