Well first and foremost he was given sex. That used to be the only way to get it, and sex was actually considered part of marital duties. It was universally agreed that there was no such thing as raping your wife until very recently. Withholding sex (by either party) was grounds for an at fault divorce.

Speaking of divorce, there was no such thing as no fault divorce. One party had to go to court and prove that the other was not fullfilling marital obligations (abuse, abandonment, withholding sex, husband refusing to provide, adultery, felony conviction, mental illness, etc).

He was also given legal authority over his family. He was literally the “head of household.” If the wife said I think we should do x and the husband said I think we should do y, if they couldn’t agree at the end of the day, the husband had legal power to simply impose his will.
